I Am Legend & Hell House Richard Matheson

My mom gave me another group of books and this round was a collection of 2 novels and several short stories by Richard Matheson. I never heard of him before and I am sorry I didn’t. I grabbed the book to read because of the second featured novel Hell House. The first part of the book is I am Legend.

I think there is a movie but I don’t know if it is the same thing or not. Anyway there is this plaque which turns everyone into vampires, everyone except Robert Neville. Every night, the vampires come for his blood but he protects himself. He is alone in this world of vampires. What I like about this book is the different take on vampires as it being a infection instead a thing of legend. The ending pulls the title together and I don’t want to go into because it is an excellent novel. Yes it is horror and I love his clipped and right to the point styling.

The second novel is Hell House don’t read this if you are not into depravity, sex violence. This in my opinion is the best haunted house story I ever read. It is twisted and interesting. A group of people including a scientist visit Hell House in hopes to eradicate the powers there. The mystery and the history of the house come to life through a series of twists and turns.

There are several short stories included in this collection and my favorite would have to be “Prey” about a killing Zulu doll, “Dance of the Dead” a futuristic twisted story and alternate history of World War 2. If you enjoy horror stories then there is no doubt you will enjoy Richard Matheson. I am planning on finding some more of his work. I would say much of his work is not bloody but just plain creepy.

Free TV

As many of you know I don’t have cable or satellite because I don’t have the extra money to spend on it when I can watch the shows I like for free on the Internet. For $20 (the cost of my DSL) I can watch whatever I want. Of course some stuff is not legal but some websites especially from the networks themselves offer free to watch episodes. If you are not sure where to turn, check out Spreety TV Online : Watch TV Shows Online Free. I clicked on the CBS icon and now I can watch my favorite show CSI and I don’t need cable or satellite, so take that!

Sunshine’s Computer Time

Since she was three, Sunshine liked to be on the computer. She  plays a lot of Powerpuff Girls, educational games on PBS kids plus other games like cooking and taking care of pets plus some dress up games and room decorating games. She normally finds her cooking and caring games on Girl Games website. I have all her favorite websites saved on Internet Explorer in her favorite box and she can find whatever she want with one click. For being 5 she is a pretty smart girl and she can properly shut down Windows and she can turn on the DSL modem and start up the computer. She loves playing on the computer and probably is on at least once a day. Now I am trying to teach how to type her name.

Every Picture Tells a Story

When I am looking for some kind of inspiration to write something, I start browsing the web for art websites. I found this one which is pretty interesting and it is an art gallery that features illustrations for children’s books. Why I find this so interesting is I am trying to write and illustrate a children’s book and sometimes the illustrations are more than just drawings but something deeper.

Every Picture Tells a Story Gallery (everypicture.com) located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, California features work from by Walt Disney, Dr, Suess, Jim Shultz and other artists of childhood.

This is a book cover for Freak the Mighty by David Shannon (artist). There is something that draw me to this picture as there is someone looking out toward the west wear one might find salvation.

This one is called “Pirate Crew and Captain Eye” by Clive Barker. There is no question why I would be drawn to something like this as I have been experimenting in the surreal world lately

And because my daughter and I both love Curious George, I found this picture from the gallery Artwork done by HA Rey.

There seems to be an array of work to be found here at this gallery. So why not Visit the official Every Picture Tells A Story Gallery website! and learn more about the gallery.

Cheese Dip

I love dips with cheese. I don’t care for ranch or other salad dressing type dips I love my salsa and I love my cheese. In fact the spicier the salsa the happier I am. I never made a dip before and maybe sometime I should try. What brought this one was looking at the Gordo’s Cheese Dip Blog. For those who don’t know Gordo’s makes authentic Mexican cheese dip that many people enjoy at a Mexican restaurant.

They have a blog where you can post recipes you created with the cheese dip or find something new to make for your next party. You don’t have to be a chef or some fancy cook just come up with something and you can post it. How cool is that?

So why not check it out today!

Banned Books

I just read an article on AOL about the newest book that parents are up in arms about this new book “Diary of a Half Indian” or something like that and it got me thinking. There’s nothing I love to read more than books that are the banned list. I read Catcher in the Rye years ago and maybe I should reread it to refresh my memory. Actually, I should read books that piss people off. My biggest dream in life would be to have my book banned from all public schools. But this got me thinking since Sunshine will be starting school and in a couple of years she will have a summer reading list as well.

Will I prescreen books on the list and find the appropriate for my daughter? Chances are I already most of them. I don’t believe in censorship but I believe in discussing things. So yeah she can read what ever she wants but I will be reading the same thing so we can talk about. One thing that was instilled in my when I was young was a story is only a story. When I was 10 I read Stephen King, yeah my mom knew about it, she supplied the books. Yes there were curse words and some scary stuff but at the end of the day I knew it was fake and only a story.

My question to is, what would you do?

Yard Adventures

Yesterday, I started to mow the lawn. I ran out of gas in the mower about 3/4 of the way in. We have about one acre of ground and our riding tractor needs a new belt so it was push mower. As I mowed the grass, I was bit by a horsefly. Lovely, I know. Today my wrist and back of my hand swelled up pretty good and it sore as hell and itchy. I use to have pretty bad reactions to insect bites years ago but then it went away and I haven’t had an problems. I don’t know why this bit got bad.

On a more pleasant note, my sunflowers are two feet figh and have nice thick stalks. They have another 4 feet to grow, I can’t until they bloom which won’t be until the end of July. That is of course, if the sun will shine again. It seems like it all does is rain and rain with peeks of sunshine. The are two other plants that are growing as well. The vines are getting longer and now we have to tie them to string so they grow up the side of the house.

When everything blooms, I will have to make sure to take a picture so you all can see what I am talking about.
